Summary |
Born in Marinette, Wisconsin, to parents who had immigrated from Värmland, Sweden, Hassell pioneered the idea of the Great Circle air route from North America to Europe. In 1928 he and a companion flew from Rockford, Illinois, bound for Stockholm, Sweden, but were forced down on a Greenland ice cap by high winds and deficient gas supply. They were later rescued. In 1968 the "Greater Rockford" was salvaged from Greenland and returned to the United States. Hassell was named to the Aviation Hall of Fame in 1971. |
