Summary Pauline lives with her sister Martha in a small town in Belgium. Pauline is childlike, a mentally retarded older adult, who can't tie her shoes, but who spends hours watering flowers in the garden. Her greatest love is her glamorously zaftig sister Paulette, a community opera diva who surrounds herself with bright colors. When Martha dies unexpectedly, Paulette tries everything in her power to shove Pauline out of her life and into their sister Cecile's (Rosemarie Bergmans), or an institution.
